My Chemical Romance Expands The Black Parade With Animated Short
My Chemical Romance released the nine-minute animated short 'Prelude To The End' to mark the 20th anniversary of 'The Black Parade,' featuring a star voice cast and launching ahead of their final Los Angeles concerts.

My Chemical Romance released the short film Prelude To The End on October 28, 2023. The nine-minute animation celebrates the 20th anniversary of their 2006 album The Black Parade and is based on its opening track, 'The End.' Directed by visual artist Lauren Tsai, the film was produced by her studio UNREAL INC. It fuses Tsai's own The Dying World project with the band's established mythology.
A distinctive voice cast brings the story to life. The film follows Astrid, a student at a mysterious New England boarding school called Paper Academy, which is overrun with rubbish. Lauren Tsai voices the character of Astrid herself. The supporting cast includes major names from music and beyond.
Voice Cast and Creative Team
Lauren Tsai, who previously directed the animated video for Boygenius's 'Cool About It,' led the project. Her involvement connected the film to Phoebe Bridgers, who is a member of that group. The film explores themes of creativity, youth, and self-expression, with Astrid navigating a school governed by three strict rules: Don't Get Hurt, No Delusions, and All Trash Is Taken Care Of.
Soundtrack and Musical Collaboration
The soundtrack is a key component, blending My Chemical Romance's music with a contemporary classical piece. It features the band's own 'The End.' alongside a live recording of Pascal Dusapin's Flying River, Violin Concerto. That concerto was performed by the Utopia Orchestra at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Giuseppe Mengoli conducted the orchestra, with Daniel Lozakovich as the solo violinist.
Anniversary Context and Release Timing
The short film serves as a creative centerpiece for the album's 20th-anniversary celebrations. My Chemical Romance released a reissue of The Black Parade on October 30, 2023. The band stated that "they've been celebrating and expanding the world of their third studio album, The Black Parade, which turned 20 last week."
Its release was strategically timed around the band's live performances. The film was screened ahead of My Chemical Romance's final two Los Angeles concerts, a five-night residency at the Hollywood Bowl on October 30 and 31. Phoebe Bridgers, who voices a character, was also in Los Angeles for a separate Halloween merchandise pop-up. The film's setting, Paper Academy, has sparked fan speculation about a potential connection to The Paper Kingdom, an unfinished album project by the band. The anniversary activities have fueled renewed commercial interest, with the reissue potentially achieving a high chart placement. The short film's screening directly preceded the band's final Hollywood Bowl concerts.
