Park Hoon-jung's 'Tristes Tropiques' Expands Global Reach

Park Hoon-jung's upcoming film 'Tristes Tropiques' has secured a wide array of international distribution deals ahead of its November 25 Korean theatrical release. The sales agent Finecut has sold the film to distributors across North America, Europe, and Asia, significantly expanding its global footprint beyond recent festival recognition.

Well Go USA acquired North American distribution rights. Swift Distribution took French-speaking territories, while Alfa Pictures will handle Spain and Andorra. Blue Swan Entertainment secured Italy, and CaiChang International, Inc. acquired Taiwan. Further deals include Splendid Film for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, Media4Fun for Poland, Multivision India for the Indian subcontinent, PT Prima Cinema Multimedia for Indonesia, and Izagur Media for Mongolia.

Doris Pfardrescher, President and CEO of Well Go USA, expressed enthusiasm for continuing the company's relationship with director Park Hoon-jung. She stated that Tristes Tropiques elevates his signature blend of style, emotion, and hard-hitting action to a new level. Didier Costet, President and CEO of Swift Distribution, similarly noted his delight in announcing the acquisition of what he called an exciting new cinematic journey.

Festival Recognition

The film's path to global distribution was paved by critical acclaim on the international festival circuit. In September, Tristes Tropiques won the Grand Prix Nouveau Genre Canal+ at L’Étrange Festival in Paris. It also secured the Silver Raven Award in the International Competition at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.

Adding to its prestige, the film was selected as the closing feature for the London Korean Film Festival. These accolades have bolstered the film's profile among global cinema enthusiasts.

Production and Creative Team

Tristes Tropiques is produced by Gold Moon Pictures and co-produced by Studio&New. The project is backed by Mindmark Inc, a creative content studio under Korea’s Shinsegae Group. The narrative centers on a band of young killers trained by a figure known only as Master, who holds absolute sway over a tropical rainforest. The story begins when Master turns up dead and nobody knows who killed him.

The cast includes Lee Sin-young, Park Yu-rim, Kim Myung-min, Park Hae-soo, Austin Lin, Chen Yi-Wen, and Wang Po-Chieh. Well Go USA has previously distributed Park Hoon-jung's The Witch film series and The Childe in North America. The film's rollout continues across multiple continents following its domestic debut.
