Universal Music to open first UK hotel on London's Denmark
Universal Music Group's hospitality arm will open a hotel on London's historic Denmark Street in Q4 2026, operating a venue and programming within

Universal Music Group's hospitality arm, UMusic Hospitality & Lifestyle, will open its first UK hotel on London's Denmark Street in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company announced the partnership with developer Outernet London on September 2.
UMusic Hotel Denmark Street will be located within Outernet's West End entertainment district, which the company says attracts 120 million visitors annually. The district includes the 2,000-capacity Outernet Live venue and the grassroots site The Lower Third. UMHL will lead programming and operations at The Lower Third, coordinating with Universal Music Group's global network of artists, labels, and partners.
Historic Music Location
Denmark Street has been known for decades as London's "Tin Pan Alley," historically lined with music publishers, recording studios, and instrument shops. The music weekly Melody Maker was founded there in 1926. In 1952, NME's Percy Dickins compiled Britain's first sales-based singles chart from the street. The Lower Third venue occupies the former site of the 12 Bar Club, which once hosted artists like Jeff Buckley, Adele, and The Libertines.
"Denmark Street holds a special place in music history," said Jordi Solé, President of UMHL. "For decades, it has been a place where artists found their voice, creativity flourished, and music culture took shape."
Partnership and Vision
The wider deal between UMHL and Outernet covers food and beverage concepts, lounge spaces, and artist-led programming across Outernet's digital platforms. Philip O'Ferrall, CEO of Outernet, stated music has always been a driving force for the district. "Connecting that heritage with a platform that can reach mass audiences both physically and through our immersive screens and audio technology is what makes this partnership so special," O'Ferrall said.
The new hotel agreement follows the closure of Chateau Denmark, a previous hotel partnership with Outernet that operated across 16 buildings on and around the street. Chateau Denmark closed on August 4 after more than four years of operation.
UMusic Hotels Expansion
This will be UMHL's second hotel in Europe, following the debut of UMusic Hotel Madrid, which opened on November 14, 2022, with 130 rooms inside the city's Albéniz Theater building. Universal Music Group launched the UMusic Hotels brand in October 2020 through a joint venture with investment group Dakia U-Ventures.
The brand's portfolio has expanded significantly. The following planned developments illustrate the scale of the expansion:
| Location | Project Name | Key Details | Status/Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madrid, Spain | UMusic Hotel Madrid | 130 rooms in the Albéniz Theater building | Opened November 2022 |
| Austin, Texas, USA | UMusic Hotel & Private Residences Austin | 150 guest rooms and 600 private residences | Construction due early 2027, subject to approvals |
| Kansas City, Missouri, USA | UMusic Hotel Kansas City | 169 guest rooms in the Scarritt Building, plus a 309-unit residential tower | Construction due Q4 2026 |
| Tulum, Mexico | UMusic Hotel & Beach Club Tulum | 57-key property with an 800-capacity beach club | Opening first week of December 2026 |
In March 2026, UMHL formed a joint venture with IMI Group to launch UMusic Beach Clubs & Lifestyle, incorporating the O Beach venues in Ibiza and Dubai. That venture is behind the Tulum project. Universal Music Group does not break out revenues or profits for its hospitality business in its quarterly financial reports.
Corporate Strategy
UMHL describes itself as "developed in partnership with Universal Music Group" rather than as a wholly owned division. In his annual New Year memo to staff on January 8, 2026, UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge named superfan monetization as a priority, pointing to the company's retail stores and experiential hospitality strategy. "2026 will see additional scaling of this activity," Grainge wrote, highlighting expansions and integrations between virtual and real-life events for superfans.
