Jake Xerxes Fussell Shares Two New Tracks from Upcoming Album
Folk singer-songwriter Jake Xerxes Fussell releases two new songs, 'Boney' and 'Boll Weevil,' from his forthcoming album *The Old Beloved Path*, offering unique interpretations of traditional American folk tunes.

Jake Xerxes Fussell has unveiled two new tracks, 'Boney' and 'Boll Weevil,' from his upcoming album *The Old Beloved Path*, set for release on September 18 via Fat Possum. These songs continue Fussell's exploration of American folk traditions, each with its own distinct history and interpretation.
## 'Boney': A Maritime Chant with a Twist
Fussell describes 'Boney' as a 'short drag,' a type of maritime worksong used to keep pace during brief hauling tasks aboard ships. The song has evolved over time, with versions recorded by musicologists like Sam Eskin and folk singer Paul Clayton. While the lyrics loosely recount events from Napoleon Bonaparte's life, they often prioritize his dancing and cursing over his military exploits. Fussell appreciates the song's fragmented portrayal of a complex historical figure, noting that some variants even have Napoleon crossing the Rockies in addition to the Alps.
## 'Boll Weevil': A Closer Look at an Invasive Figure
'Boll Weevil' takes a different approach, focusing on a pest that has both literal and metaphorical significance. Fussell draws inspiration from versions by Sid Selvidge, Charley Patton, and Blind Willie McTell, blending verses to create a cohesive narrative. The song explores themes of encroachment, opportunism, and parasitism, with the boll weevil depicted as everything from a literal parasite to a shrewd market competitor. Fussell finds the song's ambiguity compelling, as it reflects the weevil's search for a home-a theme that resonates with many.
Both tracks showcase Fussell's ability to reinterpret traditional folk music, offering fresh perspectives on well-known themes. *The Old Beloved Path* promises to be a rich exploration of American folk traditions, blending history, storytelling, and musical innovation.
