Sunflower – Post Malone, Swae Lee | Track Review

The Definitive Late 2010s Single

I remember when this song first came out. I was entering my freshman year of college, and Post Malone dominated streaming and radio at the time. Then, Into the Spider-Verse was released, surprising everyone with how brilliant it was.

When this single was came out, it was inescapable. It was the perfect chill, seasonal pop-rap song that could be played everywhere — so much to the point where I can’t stand any late 2010s pop-rap anymore.

The song itself is alright. Swae Lee and Post Malone put in equal effort, each adding their own unique touch. The chorus is catchy, and Post’s verse is a head-bobber. The warm aesthetic and mellow vibes reflect the overall tone of the Spider-Verse movie as well.

The lyrics are solid enough for a pop banger, and the production is generic enough for radio play while still fitting into multiple playlists.

Overall, this isn’t a bad single, but it might be the most overplayed song of the 2010s. The moment I heard my dad humming the main instrumental I knew it had become too popular. I have a decent amount of nostalgia for it, but mostly, it reminds me why it’s essential to move on from the past.
